Susan Coyne

Born in England, Susan currently divides her time between Florida and Nantucket, Massachusetts.  She was a fashion Editor at Glamour Magazine before she co-founded her own women’s clothing line.  Eventually she went back to school and received her degree in Landscape Design and ran her own firm for 15 years.  Susan started studying oil painting  in 2011 and has developed her artistic training by taking classes and workshops at the Art Students League, Artist Association of Nantucket and The Southern Atelier.    She believes her on-going study of traditional academic disciplines has given her a solid foundation that allows her to explore and interpret the world around her in her own voice. She is a member of the Artists Association of Nantucket and is an active member of their board of directors.

Artist Statement

In my work I explore the connection and relationship between objects and the emotions they trigger.  The space between an object is as important as the object and sometimes the simple minimal depiction says more.   My design background predicated how I see and shape my work.  Texture, mass, color are all important elements.  How light moves over objects and  how fog envelops a scene are important narratives that are my interpretation or fantasy of what they should be.    The images reside within the two dimensional frame and are based on my own associations and memories from my childhood in England and New England.   Paths to the beach, the horizon line, boats, a walk on a foggy path are all inextricably bound and often are rendered  and orchestrated in hazy contrast to what might have been. There is often a stillness and aloneness that allows the viewer time to still their mind and enter the scene and develop their own narrative.
